Queer Cinema 3

Today's' selection was Grief (1993), now out on DVD.  I first saw Grief at the Minneapolis/St Paul GLBT Film Festival...I think it played at the Bell Auditorium.  Or maybe it was the Northrup...I dunno, I do remember it was on the U campus, at any rate.

And it was a hoot.  I really liked this film.  I thought it was well-written with some great ideas...especially the idea of a grade-Z television production crew working out of an old "hooker hotel".    It was also my first exposure to indie darling Craig Chester and queer cinema staple Alexis Arquette (back when he was cute).

I was kind of hoping that now it's out on DVD, it might have been remastered or something.  No such luck, although it does look as if the original film was at least cleaned before transfer.

While the writing is great and the acting is pretty good, the actual production of the film leaves a little to be desired.  Yes, it is an independent film...in fact, it is an indie that looks too much like an indie.  I wouldn't go so far to say it looks like a student film, but's darn close.

Best scenes: Any of the "The Love Judge" clips, especially "Beverly/Ginger- -multiple personality" and a sublime scene where Leslie (the faboo Ileana Douglas) and Mark (Chester) discuss a script while Leslie nonchalantly and quite openly steals office supplies.
