Both Dr. J. and M have been encouraging me to write more, so tonight I sat down and thought I would do a little. I've had an idea in my head for a couple days now, so tonight seemed the right time to get some of it down. Thought I would just sort of sketch out my idea, write a page or two--just enough to remember where I was going when I came back to it later. Suddenly I found myself six pages in and the movie I was going to go to after I jotted down my ideas started an hour ago.
Even as I write this, I find myself itching to get back to my story. I'm having a little trouble with the middle and not being able to focus on the parts of the story I want to center around. I spent too many words on sideline action. Well, I guess that's why God invented rewrites.
M and I saw the movie Sin City last weekend. Awesome. It is one visually arresting movie. All through it I couldn't help but wonder why other directors don't try and take a chance now and again. Only rarely does one actually try to do something different, when more of them should.
That said, I have to admit it is a brutally violent movie. I got a little squeamish at more scenes than I thought I would. I certainly will never think of Elijah Wood as a happy little Hobbit again! A plot point I thought was brilliant was Clive Owen's explanation of how the prostitutes of the city actually controlled their neighborhood and had a deal with the cops. The pros ran it well. It reminded me of Emil's line in the book Closet Case about how he thought hookers should unionize.
Forty gets closer every day. I do not approach it with the glee I once had.
Jer and I went to see a showing of Minnesota Shorts Showcase Tuesday night. All of the short movies were directed by Minnesotans. It was part of the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival (you figure it out). The shorts varied in quality of ineptitude, but I did find some I liked. Jer and I of course disagreed on some of them, ha. The showing was the Bell Auditorium on the West Bank. Hadn't been there for years.
I have a chance to see a couple episodes of the new Doctor Who series tomorrow. I'd really like to go...but not sure if I will make it. Jas has been away on vacation (he was to get back tonight) and I haven't seen him for weeks. I suspect he will call tomorrow and want to brunch after church and catch up. See if I can fit both in.
Losing steam. And my fingers are cramping. Maybe a taco run.
