George Carlin / The Hair Piece

George Carlin died last Sunday night. He was a comedian I always liked, having first heard him via his album "Class Clown" (I bought it at a garage sale sometime in the mid-late 1970's).

Yes, it does contain the (in)famous "7 Words You Can Never Say On Television" (and I was very careful not to play that when my parents were around). It is a funny and thoughtful routine. Yes, I say thoughtful. Just sit back and listen, really listen to it. Ignore the ‘7 Words’ themselves and listen to what Carlin says about them; especially his proclamation: “No bad words…” Although “7 Words” was not my favorite routine on the album, I do have to admit the funniest bit is about #7, “Tits”. (“Corn tits!”)

My favorite part of the album was not on the vinyl at all. The inner sleeve of "C.C." featured a piece written by Carlin called “The Hair Piece”. I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever read. It was amazing and powerful to me--and it rhymed! It showed me just how agile our language can be and how one can use it to create and evoke. Any long, rhyming poem I wrote for fun after reading "The Hair Piece was basically inspired by and probably my own subconscious version of it.

The Hair Piece—George Carlin

I'm aware some stare at my hair
In fact, some really despair of my hair
But I don't care
'cause they're not aware
nor are they debonair
In fact, they're just square
They see hair down to there
say BEWARE and go off on a tear
I say "No fair"
A head that's bare is really nowhere
So be like a bear
Be fair with your hair
Show it you care
Wear it to there, or to there,
or to THERE if you dare
My wife bought some hair at a fair
to use as a spare
Did I care?
Au contraire!
Spare hair is fair
In fact, hair can be rare
Fred Astaire got no hair
nor does a chair
or a chocolate eclair
And where is the hair on a pear?
Nowhere, mon frere
Now that I've shared
this affair of the hair
I think I'll repair to my lair
and use Nair,
do you care?

(Here's my beard
Ain't it weird? Don't be sceered
's just a beard)
